“... In front of the mirror, I was applying make-up techniques to soften my features. I knew I was lucky to be a bit lighter than the other girls, but my nose and hair were still a problem! As a black girl, I was born far away from the standards of beauty and femininity. My nose is broad; my hair is kinky, short, and hard. Like every woman at home, I grew up learning how to “fix” my blackness. Together we shared a trying-to-be space, spending hours looking at ourselves in the mirror, modeling around the sitting room, and jealously taking care of our white doll's hair...”
